1. Press Release: Community of givers support music and arts development in under-served youth

NEW YORK, June 11, 2012 — Start-up social business, CharitySub, has assisted 15 charities in just its first six months by building a community of givers to support and raise awareness for issues from Childhood Obesity and Hunger to Clean Water and Working Dogs.

This month, the CharitySub team is working with their community of givers to bring more arts and music education to local kids and at-risk youth, a cause that’s become critical since the reduction of many arts programs and funding in public education.

CharitySub Communications Director, Amy Crews, explains: “CharitySub.org is an online social business that is building a community of givers who contribute just a small amount each month to support some of the biggest social and environmental issues affecting us today.

This month, our community has grown again, and together we’ll be supporting three local New York charities focused on the benefits of arts and music education to promote creativity, individualism, confidence, learning and social development amongst youth.

As funding for arts and music programs in public schools is cut, many communities have reported dramatic negative impacts on youth and society as students lose the opportunity to express themselves creatively.

Our goal is to encourage ‘Confident Creative Kids’, which will include helping to bring arts and music back into public schools, engaging at-risk and under-served students in arts programs within their communities, and providing access to arts and music in shelters, health clinics and other community sites.

Our charities this month - Apple Arts, Little Kids Rock and Publicolor - have all been doing great work in this area for a number of years. You can find out more about their work by watching this month’s feature videos on our home page at www.charitysub.org

CharitySub’s collective giving model helps people to give sustainably - each member contributes just $5.00 a month - while ensuring that as a community people are having a real impact. For example, instead of seeking a one-off $5000 donation from one individual for one charity we encourage 1000 individuals to give just $5.00 a month and each month their contribution helps a different cause, a new family, an at-risk individual.

One of the reasons our approach works is that we do the leg work for our community by carefully choosing three non-profits each month that we know are having a real impact on that month’s feature cause. We then video their work and share it with our community so they can decide where they want their dollars to go to. I guess you can say we’ve taken the guess-work out of giving.

But as a community, we not only give more, we learn more. Our members have the opportunity to learn about the monthly cause and to know exactly what their chosen charity is doing. The larger we build our community, the more public awareness we will raise about these important social issues, which is often just as important and effective as contributing dollars.”
