CharitySub directly helped more than 4,004 people, but that’s only a small portion of the impact we made in 2012. Not all of the work made possible by our donations is easily quantifiable.

Through donations for things like water tests, food pantries, school supplies and policy changing efforts, we have surely touched the lives of thousands more. We are so excited to see what 2013 has in store!

300,000 veterans suffer from major depression, 320,000 veterans have experienced traumatic brain injury, suicide rates among veterans have increased by 150% since 2001, each night around 67,000 veterans sleep on the street or in transitional housing, and of the 21.8 million veterans in the United States over 5.5 million are living with disability.

These are shocking facts; facts that we at CharitySub believe more people need to know. Our members support a different cause each month, and for Veterans Day we are sharing a range of engaging infographics (see below) that tell the story of the plight of many of our returning veterans in the U.S.

Amy Crews, Co-Founder of CharitySub, said the CharitySub team hoped that by telling these facts through clear, concise and visually appealing infographics, our members would help to raise more awareness of these issues along with their donations which go towards supporting our returning veterans.

“We are working with three non-profits this month - The Blind Veteran Association, Puppies Behind Bars and The Jericho Project – all working to give our veterans the extra support they need.

As you are aware, Hurricane Sandy has devastated the North East. Many Americans are looking for food, shelter and a long term plan for recovery. We have compiled a few ways that you can help aid those most in need. Below find our 5 ways to help Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts.

1. Give blood through American Red Cross

3. Text SANDY to 80888 to make a $10 donation evenly distributed across the American Red Cross, AmeriCares and the Salvation Army

What if you could give just $5.00 a month and have a big collective impact on 12 causes each year?

People in the CharitySub community are doing just that, and in October they’re helping to end bullying during National Anti-Bullying Month.

During October, the growing CharitySub community will each give their $5.00 monthly donation to support one of three charities working to end bullying.

Bullying is a huge issue that can affect us all. No matter who you are, you’re at risk of being bullied. But for many students it’s a trauma they face every day, which can lead to serious emotional and physical harm, and an increased risk of suicide.

Our three chosen charities this month - Angels and Doves, National Save, and National School Climate Center - are each having a big impact on bullying prevention through educational programming and support for teachers and students, and anti-bullying awareness campaigns.

CharitySub member contributions will help these amazing organisations to get on with their work and help to put an end to bullying across America.

But our CharitySub community will also play a bigger part during National Anti-Bullying Month by helping to raise awareness about the scary statistics of bullying in our schools and how, as a community, we can help to tackle this problem.

Students are taking action to put a stop to bullying in their schools – just check out the work of Students Against Violence Everywhere - and we believe the rest of the community should play a part too.

Later in October, CharitySub will host a special anti-bullying brunch/event to raise more funds for bullying prevention and to mark National Anti-Bullying Month. Stay tuned for more details of the event.

You can listen to the Fresh Air interview with Penn Vet Working Dog Center director Dr. Cynthia Otto and training director Annemarie DeAngelo here. And you can see a video of Bretagne getting comfortable by the mic here. Listen for the occasional “ruff” from Bretagne in the interview.

We love seafood, but for one in five people on this planet fish is their only source of protein.

And for more than 100 threatened fish in our rivers and oceans, their existence depends on changing the way we fish.

This month, CharitySub, a social enterprise that gives to a different cause each month, is doing its part to end overfishing.

“When people think about overfishing they often think about quantities. But the risk is not just the amount of fish we’re pulling in, it’s about how we fish, where we farm fish and what types of fish we eat,” CharitySub communication director, Amy Crews said.

“That’s why CharitySub through its hundreds of US members is supporting three charities this month that advocate for policy change to end overfishing, reinvent the seafood industry and create programs that support healthy oceans and sustainable fisheries.

“Our hand-picked September charities – Future of Fish, Marine Fish Conservation Network and Sea Web – will benefit from the monthly donations from our CharitySub members.

“But because overfishing, threatens to wreak havoc on marine ecosystems and affects the millions of humans that depend upon the ocean for their dinner and their livelihood, this issue needs more than just dollars,” Amy said.

“CharitySub will be working with our charities to raise more awareness and campaign policy makers and the industry to reinvent for a better future for fish. We’ll help to support entrepreneurs in the industry, conservation networks and the use of science to change the way people interact with the ocean.”

Press Release: Putting dollars in the piggy bank for financial literacy

Financial literacy is one of America’s biggest challenges and an issue that is at the heart of our basic quality of life. It’s not just a challenge for Wall Street. It’s a major issue that addresses poverty, health, education and quality of living across America.

This month social enterprise, CharitySub and our community of givers, are filling the piggy bank with dollars to support financial education and economic empowerment throughout the U.S.

We’re supporting three non-profits - Operation Hope, W!SE and World of Money - with contributions of $5.00 from each of our 300+ members going directly to programs that help underserved youth and children (aged 7-18), adults in at-risk areas, and victims of domestic violence become more financially aware.

“We want to help equip and empower people to be financially responsible for life, and prevent the cycle of poverty across the U.S.,” Co-Founder of CharitySub, Amy Crews said.

“When 28% of African American and Latino households throughout the country do not hold a bank account and 35% of people over 65 rely entirely on Social Security, financial literacy is certainly an area worth our support.

Over the past six months, CharitySub has worked with 18 non-profits to raise awareness of, and contribute dollars toward addressing, issues such as Hunger in America, the Literacy Gap, Child Sex Trafficking and Obesity. While working on these causes, it became increasingly clear to the CharitySub team that improving financial literacy was at the heart of some of America’s biggest challenges.

We know people who are financially illiterate are much more likely to remain or end up living in poverty. In turn, this affects all other aspects of their life like where they live, whether they go to school and what health services they can access.

If we can eradicate financial illiteracy we’ll be able to have a bigger impact on improving people’s quality of life overall.

We’ve learnt from our partners that financial literacy is much more than just math or counting money, it’s about economic empowerment particularly in our most at-risk and underserved communities. It’s a way to give all Americans an opportunity to participate fully in our increasingly complex global economy.

We believe that by giving people, both young and old, a chance to learn to be more financial literate we can give everyone the building blocks of a sound financial future.

We’re calling on the people of Wall Street and every other financial district across America to join CharitySub this month and give their support to help make a real difference to financial literacy levels across America, particularly in our poorest communities.

Lovely Additions to CharitySub

You may have noticed a few upgrades around CharitySub.org. It’s actually more than a few, but here are the ones we’re really excited about.

1. Who did you vote for?

One of the reasons we built CharitySub was to connect people with great non-profits. CharitySub members are exposed to 36 different non-profits per year, and our hope is that you will have a relationship outside of CharitySub with some of them. That could be recommending them to friends or calling them directly to make an extra contribution.

Through our ‘History of Giving’ it is now easy to look back in time to see which non-profits you have selected. Simply visit your dashboard to view!

2. Find Past Causes

One of the biggest things missing from CharitySub 1.0 was an easy way to view causes and charities from previous months. Now, above the monthly cause you will see a back arrow to find past causes along with their associated impact reports.

3. Nominate Issues you Care About

As my mother often exclaims right before she fills out any random survey, “Of course I want to give my opinion!” Well, to all those who’d like to share their opinions on upcoming causes - rejoice.

Instead of clicking back to the archives from the monthly cause page, you click forward to the nominate a cause page.

4. Latest Impact Report

I’d like to illustrate this addition by posing a hypothetical conversation between you and a friend.
